Living History Tudor Tour

A series of workshops over 2 days that allow pupils to"experience" what life was like in Tudor Times. Students meet and question:

  • HENRY VIII
  • ELIZABETH I
  • SIR FRANCIS DRAKE
  • SIR WALTER RALEIGH
  • WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Through drama, dance, discussion and role-play students can begin to understand what it must have been like to live in the "Golden Age of Discovery". The 2-day workshops cover:

  • THE LIFE OF HENRY VIII
    (focusing mainly on his marriages)
  • THE LIFE OF ELIZABETH I
    (focusing on the Armada)
  • SIR WALTER RALEIGH
    (and his voyages of discovery)
  • THE LIFE AND WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
  • THE LIFE OF PEOPLE, RICH & POOR, WHO LIVED NEAR TO YOUR SCHOOL
To conclude the workshops there is a Tudor-style Banquet in the presence of Elizabeth 1 and the local Lord of the Manor. During the Banquet the children are entertained with period performances. At the close of the Banquet the children have the opportunity to demonstrate, in different ways, to the Queen and other pupils (including children from other classes, if desired), what they have learned about the period over the 2 days.

The workshops are completed with a recap session and discussions as to whether the children would prefer to live in Tudor or modern times, & why they have made that decision.

Session details: The 2 days of workshops, run by the 4-person Children's World team, are made up of 6 sessions. Sessions 1-4 are performed with 4 different groups of 15-30 children. Sessions 5 and 6 are performed with all 60-120 children. Therefore each of the 60-120 children receives 5 hours of participatory workshops in total. In this way the smaller groups have information to show and teach the others in the finale after the Banquet.

All material for the "Living History" Tudors Tour has been based on the National Curriculum.

"I write to thank Children's World for the wonderful Tudor production. The children gained so much from taking part...it is surely the best way to teach History - to take the children back in time and allow them to meet the characters...the costumes, the characters and the sets that you brought to the school were truly wonderful - far more than we could do for ourselves. The whole experience was entertaining, motivating and thought-provoking, therefore high quality learning took place."
