Annual Report 2001-2002
CHILDREN'S WORLD'S 21st BIRTHDAY PARTY
On 3 June 2002, coinciding with the Queen's Golden Jubilee, Children's World held a large, free celebration in the Abbey Park Playground, in Glastonbury, to celebrate the Charity's 21st Birthday. More than 600 attended on a sunny and happy afternoon, and were entertained by shows from Booper the Clown, Moses the Magician and Haggis & Charlie - Jugglers Extraordinaires. There was inflatable bouncing and lots more fun. A wonderful birthday cake, made and donated by Burns the Bread, was shared by all to a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday!"
THE 21st GLASTONBURY CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL
Our 21st Glastonbury Children's Festival took place on 26, 27 & 28 July 2002. We were blessed with dry, sunny weather and had an attendance of approximately 4000 over the 3 days. As usual there were more than 20 performances each day - from previous Festival favourites like Parachute Theatre Company, Rudi Wallenda & Tip The Wink Puppets and new performers, including Blue Moon Theatre, Trans Form Theatre & the wonderfully talented children and teenagers of the Rhythm Project with their excellent percussion perfomances and workshops. Each day's Talent Show introduced wonderful new child performers, and Anne Harris had even more wild and exciting, new giant inflatable animals for the children to play and dance with. Children's World would like to thank the Area Regeneration Board, Mendip District Council, Central Somerset Gazette, Venue Magazine, Glastonbury Festivals Ltd, Georgian Portable Sanitation Ltd., Wessex Water, Cleanaway Ltd, Eric Lukins & Burns the Bread for their invaluable help. Without their support, the kindness of performers who come to us at such low cost and the help of our many wonderful Festival volunteers and Cafe team, we could not hope to stage such a wonderful event that gives so much pleasure to so many families at such a reasonable cost, whilst still managing to raise much-needed funds for our Special Schools Tours.
Big Ball

THE 3rd BRISTOL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL
The 3rd Bristol Children's Festival took place on Durdham Downs in glorious sunshine on 2, 3, 4 & 5 August 2002. Once we had finished Glastonbury, we upped sticks and moved the whole Festival up to Bristol. We had the same excellent line-up as at Glastonbury and even bigger audiences, with more than 6000 attending over the 4 days. Bristol has really taken the Children's Festival to its heart and we feel it has a great future there. We were exhausted by the time we reached the end of this 2-festival stint, but it was worth it as our audiences enjoyed themselves so much and because we raised so much money for our vital special schools work. We would like to thank the Bristol Evening Post, Venue Magazine, Glastonbury Festivals Ltd., Georgian Portable Sanitation Ltd., Wessex Water, Eric Lukins, our kind performers our wonderful Festival volunteers and our Cafe team for their invaluable help.

THE 1st SURE START
(BRIDGWATER) CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL
Sure Start in Bridgwater commissioned Children's World to stage a one-day Children's Festival for them in Cranleigh Gardens on 25 August. There was an excellent programme of events, including the majority of our usual Children's Festival performers, from 11 am.-4 pm. Sadly the weather was poor, but tremendous fun was had by all who attended. It was a real pleasure working with Sure Start and we hope that this may become an annual event.
PLAY PACKAGES
Due to extensive school touring and there being 3 Children's Festivals this year, we did not undertake as many out-of-school play package bookings as usual, but successful visits were undertaken for Take a Break, Wells Opportunity Playgroup, Corfe Mullen Summer Scheme and Playaways. The Sensory Dome visited the Neighbourhood Nursery in Taunton and the Halcon Playscheme for 10 days each, and our splendid new Soft Play Inflatable attended all play package visits and also visited Avalon, our local special school, several times. |
