Autumn 1999 Music Tour

for children with moderate learning difficulties

This five week tour visited 8 schools with five 90 minute sessions. The aim of the tour was to encourage the children to experience and understand different forms of music, and how music is used in our lives.

Their other goal was to record 3 different songs, of which 2 songs were original.

The following schools took part in this tour:
  • Fairmead school, Yeovil
  • Westhaven school, Weston-S-Mare
  • Summerfield school, Bath
  • Fosseway school, Radstock
  • Culverhill school, Bath
  • Elmwood school, Bridgwater
  • Avalon school, Street
  • Kingsweston school, Avonmouth

Each session consisted of musical games, quizes and discussions as well as a lengthy recording session.

Each school wrote and recorded a "Name Rap" which included all their names and a rhyming line (or lines) that described their interests.

They also each recorded a "Human Beat Box" song. This was basically a rhythm recorded using just their voices instead of drums. The lyrics for this song were written by themselves and was about their school.

The last song they recorded was a cover of a song of their choice. Most schools did a version of "Jingle Bells", probably as we were so near christmas, but their were some exceptions. Fairmead and Culverhill schools both did excellent versions of "Mambo no.5"., while Westhaven school did a 'reggae' version of "White Christmas"

By the end of the tour each school were left with a tape (the cover of which was designed by the groups) of all three recordings.

QUOTES
"...All the children have responded extremely well and the course has appealed to the whole age range from 11 to 15's...the mornings have been lively, interesting and well paced..."
Fran Finney, teacher, Fairmead school.
"...this tour has again grasped the imagination of the children..."
Pat Griffiths, teacher, Westhaven School.
"...The pupils' response was a joy to see. Shy ones blossomed and aggressive noisey ones were enabled to channel their energy productively. My two autistic pupils were able to contribute gradually on thier own terms until they were quite well intergrated with the rest of the group..."
Melanie Marshall, teacher, Elmwood school.
