Lunchtime Supervisory Assistants Training Sessions

One of our findings from research undertaken during our Pilot Inclusion Project was that playtimes were not necessarily particularly happy parts of the school day. Children's World believes that if children feel fully included at playtimes, then they are far more likely to be fully engaged in the classroom and in the whole of school life. We had several brainstorming sessions about whether there was any way in which Children's World could assist mainstream schools in making playtimes happier and more positive.

Tony Gdula of Somerset County Council's Support Services had been running some training sessions with Lunchtime Supervisory Assistants from local schools, and he asked us to run a LTSA Games Training Session at Brookside Junior School. This went so well that we ran another 4 training sessions for LTSA's from 10 local schools. The LTSA's were given the opportunity to look at playground life and think about how to make it better. Children's World facilitated these discussions and then taught many different large-scale and co-operative games that can be played in the playground or in the hall or classroom during wet weather playtimes.

"A welcome alternative to all the "talk" around Inclusion - some hands-on activities to help achieve it, which happen to be fun as well."

TONY GDULA, SOMERSET SUPPORT SERVICES.
"Thank you for the training session for Lunchtime Supervisors that was held at our school recently. The ladies greatly enjoyed their day and as a result of the workshops, apprach their role now in a very positive light. Without doubt, their role has been enhanced, and I am sure that they would agree that their relationship with the children has benefited too. The children love lunchtime activities...we all eagerly await the arrival of our new parachute."

RICHARD ADAMS, HEAD, CATCOTT PRIMARY SCHOOL.

These LTSA Games Training Sessions are now available for mainstream schools to buy in at £200 per day, and 2 have already taken place in Bristol primary schools.
