The 21st Glastonbury Children's Festival 2002

took place
AT THE ABBEY PARK PLAYGROUND
26, 27 & 28 JULY 2002

This lovely event celebrated its 21st anniversary in July! It is a much-loved Festival, attended by large numbers of families each year.

On each of the 3 days there were more than 20 different performances in the Marquee on the Outside Stage and in the Arena from a huge variety of high-class entertainers - children's theatre, puppetry, magic, story-telling, percussion, juggling and circus skills and more........

In addition to the many different performances, there was a Craft Marquee, where children can make hats, masks and costumes to wear in each day's Grand Parade. There were also percussion workshops from The Rhythm Project and juggling and circus skills workshops from Bosco Circus. There were inflatables to bounce on, a velcro wall to leap at, ball pools to wallow in, giant inflatable animals to dance with, badge-making, face-painting and more, including a daily Talent Show where each participant received a Certificate of Merit and a tiny prize.

Performers booked included Parachute Theatre Company with their splendid large-scale puppet shows, Rudi Wallenda and his exploding car, Blue Moon with wonderful drama stories, Trans Form Theatre with their new and fantastic promenade performance of "Alice in Wonderland", Rhythm Project, Blue Moon Theatre, Tip the Wink Puppets with their delightful "Never Trust a Squirrel", the wonderful Haggis and Charlie (jugglers extraordinaires), Booper the Clown, Nathaniel the Storyteller, Devilstick The Clown and Moses the Magician.

The Glastonbury Children's Festival was open from 10.30 until 5.00 on each of its 3 days (please note we did not open on the Monday this year). The entertainment was suitable for children of all ages, but we are not a creche, and parents could not leave their children at the site unattended, unless they were at least 10 and they had spoken to us about it first. No dogs were allowed and there was no camping on site, although there are lots of camp sites and bed and breakfasts in the area - please ring Glastonbury Tourist Information on 01458 832954 for further details.

Tickets were £6 daily for children or £4 daily for adults and under-5's, with reductions for 3-day tickets, UB40's, children with special needs and large groups. They could be purchased on the gate on the day, or in advance by telephoning 01458 832925. Once the entrance fee was paid, all performances, workshops and activities mentioned above were free. There was so much to do that we recommended a multi-day ticket.

There was a Children's World Cafe offering good, simple food at reasonable prices, a Children's World ice cream stall and a few stalls offering children's clothes, books, toys, etc.

All profits from the Glastonbury Children's Festivals help fund the Children's World Charity's extensive work with children who have special needs in the West County, by paying for some of the costs of the drama, music and participative play tours we run for special schools.

This really is an exceptional event that just gets better and better every year, and there were special celebrations in our 21st year, including our amazing new ball gun game and a special "Pie in the Eye" show!
