We moved the dates of the 1999 Children’s Festival, from the August Bank Holiday weekend to the first weekend of the summer holidays at the end of July. Thanks to sponsorship from the Central Somerset Gazette which included many large free advertisements in the Mid-Somerset Series, the Western Gazette, the Bristol Evening Post and the Western Daily Press, this change of date became well-known to the public, and thanks to this and to splendid weather for the first time in years, we had very large attendance figures.

As usual more than 20 performances took place on each of the 4 days, there were art and craft workshops, a daily Grand Parade and Talent Show, large scale games, inflatable giants and much, much more to enjoy.

We would like to express our appreciation to the Central Somerset Gazette for their invaluable sponsorship, to Mendip District Council for use of the delightful Abbey Park and for their grant of £1,000 towards performances, to Georgian Toilets Ltd. and UK. Waste Ltd. for toilet facilities, and to Somerset County Coucil and Cleanaway Ltd. for rubbish disposal. We would also like to thank all the performers for coming to us for reduced fees, to Mike Parfitt for his invaluable electrical work, to Eric Lukins for lending us fire extinguishers, to Chris Dyer for lst Aid cover, to the volunteers who ran the Café and Icecream Stall for us and to the many volunteers who helped man the craft tent, the inflatables, badge making, facepainting etc. and without whom we simply could not run such a safe and wonderful Children’s Festival — thank you all so very much!

It really was the best Children’s Festival yet, and raised a much-needed £9,715 for Children’s World’s funds which will be spent on our forthcoming tours of Somerset and (what was) Avon special schools.

The Children’s Festivals, while not the most important part of our work, are very valuable events — they provide high quality entertainment and a huge quantity and variety of performances, activities and fun for children at a very reasonable all-in fee. There are very few high quality events of this scale for children, and we feel they are very important. They also create good public relations and press for Children’s World, give us an opportunity to inform the public about Children’s World’s work, and raise much-needed funds for that work.
